Together with Bullet Events, D3 created a very special project to be part of Google’s Creative Sandbox 2012 edition. The challenge consisted on designing an experimental drawing machine to exhibit the event’s intentions of allying design and technology creatively to produce innovation. Hence, Spider Plotter!
Spider Plotter is a little robot capable of making the bridge between the digital and physical realms by means of drawings. Its first apparition was designed to intrigue at first sight. During the event, it listened to every participant’s check-in, totem interaction, or drink consumption, and drew for each of them a little “+1″ over the wall. Little by little these drawings formed the event’s brand that welcomed everyone at the entrance hall, therefore inciting their interaction with the brand itself, and introducing them to the yet unknown wonders of the place.
Held by a pair of nylon strings, the robot uses stepper motors and pulleys to silently climb the walls. The strings carry a pen attached to a little electronic board and a servo that controls its pen pressure towards the wall. At the back-end of the installation there is a computer that transmits wirelessly the commands to it, being able to control both its position and pen movement at the same time.
